VPN - For All Your Accessibility Needs

By Mitch Stenson

In this hard economic time we are all going through, many people are looking for ways to be productive and efficient. A lot of companies are turning to VPN. What is VPN and how does it work?

VPN is a common acronym for Virtual Private Network. A lot of companies are turning toward this direction for their connections on the internet. In short, VPN allows them to share the company data with their employees wherever they may be at the moment.

This system consists of both hardware and software. You will need a server and dial up. You will also need to set up a firewall.

It is very important to secure the transmission. You need to make sure that you are sending the information to only the intended user.

The sender of the the information must also be verified. This is often done with user names and passwords. A digital certificate may also be utilized. It is made up of encryption parameters that can verify a user or system. An advanced piece of equipment that helps with this as well as remote access is a concentrator.

You may be wondering how the information will travel on the web. VPNs use a method of tunneling to complete this task. Wrapping a group, or groups, together is called tunneling. The reason for this is it allows the IP address of the sender and receiver to remain anonymous.

The cost of a VPN is much less than having a dedicated phone line, which is a great advantage. This also allows employees to access information while traveling and gives them the flexibility of working from home. Working from home may increase employee productivity, considering many people commute, some up to three hours, so the benefit of working from home may motivate them.

Consider a retail company that is working from online. The company may have many offices and warehouses. They will be able to view their inventory of what is in there warehouse from their offices. According to the product arrival dates, the media department can allocate for advertising. Not waiting for their goods will increase the customer satisfaction. Each office will be able to analyze and run reports because of the network.
