Who Needs A GPS

By Lorenzo Terrell

A portable GPS system consists of a unit that is not limited to in car usage. Older GPS designs require cabling and combinations either with Palms or PDAs, relying on this adaptation and on car power. The portable GPS unit is designed according to special standards that allow for outside usage in various applications and sports such as hiking, climbing, cycling, fishing and the like. There are some differences between a portable GPS system and the car GPS unit, and although the functions and the features may be the same, what differs is design.

How to get to a destination by car? The initial purpose of satellite-assisted navigation was to support complex transportation and military operations, but its usage has become a lot more extended over the years. GPS for cars are products that receive and decode signals from a complex network of satellites that enable you to determine the current car location and help you set the route for a destination. GPS receivers are available in many designs, formats and models, with a higher or lower user-friendly rate. Inexpensive systems are easy to plug in and store, but they can be more difficult to operate and not exactly high quality. More money means more quality.

The vehicle layout is incredibly significant when trying to select a certain model. Some models of GPS for automobiles include monitors for map display, but the presence of the monitor on the dashboard may be uncomfortable with some automobile designs. You have to ensure that the device does not block the air vents and that it does not ruin the view from the passenger's seat. GPS for vehicles therefore need to be selected in order to match the dashboard features and the whole interior car design for max of efficiency and convenience.

Multi-functionality! This is one other important criterion of choosing GPS for cars. Navigation info can be provided in multiple ways, therefore it is very convenient for the user to select a variant that suits his/her needs. Some GPS receivers can help you navigate by using the data from a personal address book, others take the map location from the start, while others can operate directly by address or by intersection. Moreover, following the same line of thought, you should buy a GPS for cars with features for both graphical and vocal directions. Besides the vocal messages, the GPS monitor can indicate the direction by arrows either in relation to the name of the street or with the car position matching the destination.

There are GPS for vehicles that provide information on points of interest, airfields, ATMs, hotels, eateries and plenty of other sites. Such a complicated device may seem a bit more costly, but when you travel a lot and need to go from place to place, information is crucial. Likewise, awfully sophisticated GPS systems can make updates about the points-of-interest from a certain area. Given the multitude of features, it may appear tough to find the right GPS for vehicles. The best way to sort things out is by going to a retailer which has demo units in-store so you can check how the system works for yourself. Then, you'll know what to shop for!
